The Beginning: The Humanitarian Idea
The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement was founded in 1863 thanks to the vision of the Swiss Henry Dunant, after he witnessed the tragedies of the Battle of Solferino. He resolved to create a neutral, independent humanitarian organization dedicated to protecting human life and dignity and alleviating suffering in all circumstances, without distinction of nationality, race, or religion. Today, this Movement is the largest humanitarian network in the world.
Decades of Giving
At the national level, the Tunisian Red Crescent was founded on 7 October 1956, just after Tunisia's independence. Since then, it has acted as an auxiliary to the public authorities in the humanitarian field. The organization is recognized by the International Committee of the Red Cross and has been a member of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies since 1957.
